Patriot Act renewal sails through Senate

The USA Patriot Act was renewed Thursday by an 89-10 vote in the United States Senate, effectively shoving both feet into the mouth of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who bragged at a Democrat rally in December that senate Democrats had effectively "killed the Patriot Act."

"This bill will allow our law enforcement officials to continue to use the same tools against terrorists that are already used against drug dealers and other criminals, while safeguarding the civil liberties of the American people," said President Bush in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

Lawmakers who voted for the package claimed to still have "deep reservations about the power it would grant to whomever holds the White House," making it appear likely that the Democrat party line of voting for politically expedient bills, and then bashing them and claiming to have been "lied to" about them when pandering to their base, will remain the same for the forseeable future.

"Our support for the Patriot Act does not mean a blank check for the president," said Democratic leader Harry Reid. "What we tried to do on a bipartisan basis is have a better bill. It has been improved." Improved? Improved is not dead, Mr. Reid. Perhaps you shouldn't speak so quickly next time, espectially when bragging about "killing" our national security.
