Athens Mayoral Candidate speaks out

Athens, GA Mayoral candidate Charlie Maddox spoke to the UGACRs on Wednesday February 1st, addressing elements of his campaign and answering questions from concerned student-citizens in the audience.
Addressing a packed room, speaking freely and without notes, Mr. Maddox touched on his background in Athens business and in community service, and spoke to his plans for the city and his reasons for "offering [himself] for mayor."
"Athens needs to be a city for everybody," he said, asserting that his experience with many different segments of Athens society would allow him to "bring all players to the table" more effectively than present leadership. Maddox addressed Athens's 28% persistent poverty rate and other community problems, as well as the need for the city to work hand-in-hand with the University of Georgia to form a mutually beneficial partnership.
He expressed his hope that the Athens community could grow economically to a level which would allow UGA students to remain here after graduation if they so choose, saying that the "economic health of a community goes a long way in determining that community's future."
In his answers to several questions from students, Mr. Maddox spoke at length about his desire to make Athens a city which is more friendly to students, and which would enable both the University community and the city at large to make each other better, more attractive places to learn, work, and live.
