Muslim cartoon outrage, continued

A leading Spanish newspaper, El Pais, jumped into the Muslim cartoon fracas with both feet on Friday, publishing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad on its front page.
Reuters reports that the cartoon, which was originally published in the French daily Le Monde, "portrayed the head of the Prophet Mohammad made up of lines which say "I must not draw Mohammad" in French."
In a remarkable display of European spine, newspapers in France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, and Hungary have reprinted the caricatures and cartoons originally published by Denmark's Jyllands-Posten, arguing that freedom of the press is more important than the protests, violence, and boycotts the cartoons have provoked.
Muslims, who "consider any images of Mohammad to be blasphemous," have been reacting to this growing bravery of and refusal to capitulate by the European press in expected ways, such as surrounding the European Union offices in the Gaza Strip demanding an apology for the Danish cartoons, and invading and demolishing the Danish embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia. Unfortunately, as should have been expected, a French newspaper, France Soir, was first to snap back to its appeasing ways, firing its managing editor to show "a strong sign of respect for the beliefs and intimate convictions of every individual."
