The Senate "steamrolled opposition to the renewal of the USA Patriot Act" with a 96-3 floor vote which broke yet another weak Democrat filibuster intended to prevent the Senate from fulfilling its role in government and voting on legislation. The three who voted to continue blocking the Senate from doing its job were anti-First Amendment Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), former Klansman Robert Byrd (D-WV), and former Republican-turned-Daschle-toadie Jim Jeffords (I-VT). Senator David Vitter (R-LA) did not vote on the matter.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) said that the Patriot Act will now be able to be brought to the floor and renewed in a March 1 vote, nine days before it is set to expire.
