Minor outrage at best was sparked at the 10th anniversary National Black Fine Art Show in in New York city this week by a painting of an upside-down Christlike figure--who strongly (and intentionally) resembles Osama bin Laden.
In a telephone interview with reporter Morry Alter of New York's WCBStv, "Tafa," the piece's creator who declined to do an on-camera interview, said that "the work speaks for itself, but [added], the resemblance to Bin Laden was no accident." Alter reported that, "while some at the show did recognize the Bin Laden face on the Christ body, we found none who were offended." Instead, he said, "most defended...the artist's right to speak his mind."
The border of the painting is covered with names, phrases, and expressions, including McCarthyism, mujahadin, and Amadou Diallo (a man shot 44 times by NYC police in 1999 in what appeared afterward to be a case of mistaken identity).
The National Black Fine Art Show "features galleries from across the country selling the works of America's top African American painters, sculptors, and photographers."
No word yet on any mass riots, violence, flag burning, boycotts, or threatened kidnapping by Christians in response to this "offensive artwork."
